Dawn of a new era for leadership in Queensland?
“Could it be that leadership is no more than the passion to see the world better, and the responsibility to see the change through?”
This is the question asked by an impressive line-up of 25 Queensland leaders from across the corporate, government and community sectors as they graduate from Social Leadership Australia’s inaugural, year-long Queensland Leadership program in Brisbane tonight.
In a statement published on The Benevolent Society’s website today (and available below) the group— which includes representatives from across the environment, health, human services, finance, justice and public service sectors—said they hoped that, with the coming of the Queensland Leadership program, “a new era has dawned for social leadership within our great state.”
“We are now friends, collaborators on a journey to discover what difference we can each individually and as a group make,” the statement says.
“We have begun the work of building a community of leaders from across the corporate, government and not for profit sectors with a strong leadership frame and a common language. We hope this will bring opportunities for new ways to consider the large social issues that will define the quality of life and social equity in Queensland in the future.”
Based on the award-winning Sydney Leadership, now in its eleventh year, Queensland Leadership is a year-long program which promotes collaboration across the corporate, government and community sectors to address social issues. The program employs an innovative, Harvard-inspired, leadership development model and offers intensive, experiential learning, much of it in the community. The 2009-2010 program included visits to schools, homeless refuges, youth detention centres, Indigenous communities and support agencies and a rural study tour of the South Burnett region.
The 2009-2010 Queensland Leadership program was supported by its Principal Foundation Partner, Suncorp and its Foundation Media Partner, The Courier Mail. Brisbane City Council, RPS (formerly Conics). The Department of Premier and Cabinet also funded community scholarships, as well as supporting a staff member to take part in the program.
The 2010-2011 Queensland Leadership program kicks off in September 2010. Applications close on 31st July.
