Understanding children and young people's views on social capital and agency in their community

About the project

The Benevolent Society, in partnership with the Australian National University, University of Western Sydney and NAPCAN, is undertaking an ARC-Linkage three-year qualitative research project on children, communities and social capital. The end results will be child-centred analysis and recommendations for improving social policy directed at children living in disadvantaged communities.

The research will involve:

  • Research with small groups of children aged 7 to 12 in four communities in NSW and Qld, about how they view and interact with their communities
  • The development of a child-centred framework for policy analysis, based on the views and experiences of children
  • Analysis of policies and programs for disadvantaged communities, using the child-centred framework
  • Engagement with policy makers and practitioners to identify strategies for developing and implementing child-inclusive community-strengthening strategies.
