The Benevolent Society runs respite care services in southern and eastern Sydney and in the Nepean, Blue Mountains and Hawkesbury areas.
Respite care services give carers time off (‘respite’) so that they can do other things, have some time to relax or look after their own needs. Taking a regular break means that carers will feel better and less tired or stressed. Emergency respite care may also be needed sometimes if, for example, a carer is unwell.
There are many different types of respite care but essentially The Benevolent Society's services arrange for someone to look after the person the carer normally cares for, perhaps combined with some other help or activity as well.
The Society can arrange for respite care in the person's home, at a day centre or in a nursing home or hostel. We provide and/ or organise services tailored to the particular needs of the individual carer and the person they care for. It might be for a few hours, a day, overnight, a weekend or longer. It can be a regular weekly event or something that happens only once a year. Some services cater for people with particular language or cultural needs.
Through the Commonwealth Respite and Carelink Centre for southern and eastern Sydney, The Society gives information to carers about the various respite care services available to support them and the person they are caring for, plus help to organise it.
