Leadership is a set of skills that can be developed and strengthened with the proper motivation and desire, and with training, practice and feedback. We create opportunities for people to lead change in their own communities and spheres of influence.
The Sydney Leadership Centre
The Sydney Leadership Centre was established in 1999 when The Benevolent Society launched its award-winning Sydney Leadership Program. Now in its tenth year, Sydney Leadership has become the flagship in a portfolio of innovative leadership development programs which the Centre designs and delivers. These range from short courses and workshops through to specially tailored programs running over several months, for a diverse range of clients including major financial organisations, the youth sector and local government councils.
Our leadership model
There are many different definitions and models of leadership. In all its programs, the Sydney Leadership Centre uses an "adaptive leadership" model which differs from traditional leadership. Traditional leadership models tend to focus on leadership as an innate, individual quality, emphasising the importance of charisma and gaining power. Adaptive leadership views leadership as an activity rather than a position. It creates the conditions in which people can come up with their own solutions to difficult problems. Adaptive leadership:
- Focuses on getting people to face reality
- Mobilises people to tackle tough problems
- Emphasises purpose
- Requires people to deal with complexity and uncertainty
In this model, leadership can be learned. The adaptive leadership classroom needs to be a challenging place, where there is risk, uncertainty, complexity and emotion. Yet it must also be safe enough for us to learn. Through its portfolio of social leadership programs, the Sydney Leadership Centre provides a unique leadership classroom for its participants.
