The Sydney Leadership Program is designed for those who want to have a positive influence on the future of their organisations and their communities. It is an opportunity for personal growth and a vehicle for creating a better society.

What's involved?

The Program will open your eyes to the complex social problems facing our society.  Through a combination of experiential learning, community visits, readings, personal reflection. practical engagement and professional coaching over a 9 month period you will learn what it means to exercise real leadership. It isn’t a traditional, curriculum-based course like an MBA but it does involve intensive learning. It will help you to develop practical skills you can use at work, in the community and in your personal life.

Participants examine topics such as Indigenous issues, crime and justice, corporate social responsibility, education, employment, environment, health, homelessness, media and communications, transport and youth. The Program includes guest speakers, visits to sites and communities within Sydney, Canberra and in rural New South Wales.

Why apply?

You may currently be in a leadership role or you may be seeking to develop your leadership skills. People apply for the Sydney Leadership Program for many reasons, but there is a common thread that runs through all the applications we receive. Every year we see comments such as “I want to make a difference”, “I want to leave the world a better place” and “I want to give something back.”  What motivates the people who apply to take part in Sydney Leadership is the desire to learn how to turn these thoughts into practical action.

The personal benefits are significant

The Sydney Leadership Program requires you and your employer to make a commitment of time, money and interest - but you will both gain from the experience. By the end of the Program you will have:

  • more in-depth knowledge of a range of social issues
  • clarity of values and purpose
  • greater skills and confidence to act and increased resilience
  • greater ability to partner and collaborate successfully
  • a broader network across corporate, community and government sectors
  • capacity to exercise leadership in challenging environments

Graduates also join our Alumni Network, a group of more than 350 individuals who have participated in the Program since it was first established. This network of contacts across the community, corporate and government sectors has proved invaluable for graduates in their daily working lives.

Your organisation will benefit too

Employers play a positive and supportive role. Many major companies and government departments have sponsored employees through the Sydney Leadership Program.  Sponsoring organisations benefit from the increased practical leadership skills of graduates, who develop a greater capacity to act in challenging and uncertain environments. Other benefits that employers regularly tell us about include improved communication and team building skills and increased motivation.
