The Benevolent Society provides help with housing for older people on low incomes.
Low cost housing
The Benevolent Society operates three small retirement housing complexes in Sydney for older people on low incomes who are able to care for themselves. Each of the villages has self contained bed-sit units and a village manager who can help residents arrange community care services if they become necessary.
Most residents are people in their late 70s and above who previously lived in insecure housing. The villages are in Allambie Heights, Bexley and Little Bay.
Homeless older people
In the Canterbury area of Sydney the Benevolent Society runs a service that helps older people who are homeless or in danger of becoming homeless. Often they are people who have mental health or drug and alcohol problems, as well as poor health associated with older age. Many have lost contact with family members, are socially isolated, mistrustful of others and have low literacy.
Our staff work hard to gain their trust, find them affordable and secure housing and obtain any health and care services needed immediately. The Society then advocates on their behalf with government agencies, health services and community organisations to help them obtain any necessary long term support, such as household help, nursing support, meals on wheels, transport and personal care.
