The Benevolent Society’s practical work and research give us a unique insight into the lives and experiences of individuals and communities in Australia.
We take the lead on issues of importance to us and society, often forming coalitions of like-minded organisations to work together towards making the big social changes that are needed. We listen to and work with our clients, encouraging them to speak out on the issues that affect them personally. Read our submissions to the 2020 summit.
We have identified 12 broad areas for action that are linked to our purpose and our work. We don’t claim to have specific expertise across all 12 areas but we can take action at a range of levels, including joining with others in a coalition of voices to have greater impact. We are currently focusing our efforts on 4 of those 12 areas, where we have on-the-ground experience and recognised expertise to be a credible voice.
Four areas for focused action
1. Health and social inclusion of young children
The building blocks for a healthy and safe childhood include living in a connected community, where children and their families have good learning experiences, adequate incomes and employment opportunities.
The Benevolent Society is a signatory to the ARACY Commitment to Young Australians 2007, a set of principles developed to guide the decisions and actions of organisations to ensure they positively impact on children and young people.
2. Ageing well and social inclusion of older people
Older people can age actively, safely and well. Where possible this means older people staying at home with the support they need, and being connected to and valued by their community. For those requiring residential care this means promoting safe, enriching environments and compassionate care.
3. Community safety and social inclusion
We promote safety and non-violence to reduce the occurrence and impact of violence and crime on women, children and other vulnerable community members.
4. Leadership, democracy and the role of non profit organisations in promoting social inclusion
We take a leadership role in the sector as a way of promoting a healthier democracy and civic society, particularly for disadvantaged groups normally shut out from decision making processes.
Broader areas of social and economic inclusion
5. Secure and affordable housing
6. Mental health
7. Access to transport
8. Environment and the impact of climate change
9. Social and economic inclusion of Indigenous people
10. Income and economic participation
11. Cultural and ethnic diversity
12. Geographic and locational impacts and social inclusion
We are optimistic about the future. The social issues we are tackling are complex, but we have seen that things can improve over time. And we are proud to see our work contribute to vital changes in society. Follow this link to read The Benevolent Society’s policy papers.
