Women from all walks of life can be affected by domestic violence. Domestic violence is more than just physical abuse. It also involves the emotional, psychological, sexual, social and financial abuse and control of a woman by her intimate partner. With support, women affected by domestic violence can create safe and positive futures for themselves and their children.

A supportive approach

The Benevolent Society works with women in a supportive, confidential and non-judgmental way to help them and their children become safer.

“My life has changed a lot. I had (the counsellor) to talk to, a good ear to listen… I learnt to value myself. I learnt to help myself emotionally. I felt secure about confidentiality. I was put in contact with other people and groups.” – Woman attending the domestic violence service 2005
  • In a 2004 survey 34% of Australian women had been subjected to domestic violence by an intimate male partner.
  • Of these, 28% reported verbal abuse and controlling behaviours by partners.

Our women's health services work with women living in the Macarthur region of NSW who have been affected by domestic violence and we offer support, counselling, referral, information and groups. We also offer community education, training, consultancy, information and referral for community and government organisations and the general community.
