Women in their later years can lead rich and active lives. They also face many changes and challenges as they move past their middle years.
These range from physical changes and illness to life events like retirement, losing a partner or having children move out. Aboriginal women face a whole different set of challenges on top of these, with poorer health status due to displacement, economic disadvantage and difficult living conditions. Older women and older Aboriginal women alike also contend with negative community attitudes that confine them to set roles.
In partnership with older women and the community, The Benevolent Society challenges these ideas by acknowledging women’s rightful place in all areas of social, cultural and political life. We provide support and opportunities for older women to harness their skills and experience to create healthy, balanced and fulfilling lives.
Mid to Older Women’s Health Service
Situated in Campbelltown, we work with women and the community around a broad range of issues that may affect an older woman’s health and wellbeing. Some of these issues include community attitudes, isolation, grief, self esteem, stress, menopause, fears, anxiety, depression, relationships, family violence and adjusting to life’s changes.
We provide support, counselling and alternative therapies and run groups to provide information, personal development and mutual support for Aboriginal women 35+ and all women 45+ who live in the Macarthur region of NSW. We also provide services to the community and government and work in partnership with different organisations.
